Have Screen will Travel

We can watch travel documentaries almost anywhere. But our phones won’t take us there, neither will our computer screens or the large screen TV hanging on the walls of our homes. They won’t surround us with the vast openness of a desert landscape or radiate the seductive fragrance of a hibiscus tree on a walk through a subtropical forest. Travel documentaries aren’t meant to satisfy. They are designed to spur the wanderlust stirring in our souls.

Inspiration for Your Imagination

Travel documentaries were among the first films widely distributed to theaters in the early twentieth century. By the 1930s James FitzPatrick was the king of the travelogue with his widely distributed FitzPatrick’s Traveltalks. Famous for his signature signoff line, “As the sun gently sets …” he is the grandfather of video travel documentaries. Though now seldom seen in theaters, with the multitude of platforms and devices for viewing there are more travel documentaries and opportunities to watch them than ever before. Below are three series we hope you enjoy and inspire you to plan your next adventure with us here at Wanderlust Travel by Heather Smith.

3 Must-Watch Travel Series

Of course, there are more than three must-watch travel series and even more individual must-watch travel videos. Truly, none are must-watch; yet some are better than others.

·         Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown – Produced by CNN, this series follows the late Anthony Bourdain as he explores off-the-beaten-path destinations and their culinary treasures. Available on HBO Max.

·         Lonely Planet – As a leading travel guide publisher, Lonely Planet's video content provides practical travel advice and cultural insights. Available on YouTube.

·         Netflix – There are a lot of documentaries available through this platform. Click here for a good start on a wide array of choices.
